Trying to find a mystery, printed (in paperback) before 1984. A small town sheriff is faced with a baffling murder. Spoiler alert! It turns out that a well-to-do brother and sister are rather more than that…and want it kept unknown. I believe the story is set in Montana or Idaho, but can’t be certain.
This is a small (I think it was green with ivy on the cover) children’s book about a little girl who is not allowed in her sister’s room without permission for fear she will make a mess. She gets in one day and does make a mess while playing, but then cleans it up. If I remember correctly, her sister is angry when she realizes her little sister went in without permission but then forgives her when she sees how tidy her room was left.
I’ve been trying to figure out the title and author of this childhood ‘book memory’ my brother has for the past 3 years. If you are able to solve the mystery, it would be a “Christmas Miracle”!! 🎄
Here is the memory:
“All the illustrations were in blues and greys. It was about a boy, I think with a number of brothers, and the brothers were possibly changed into animal shapes, or possibly it was princesses changed into animal shapes. I think there was a sorceress or magician. And there were pictures of horses? And maybe dogs?”
I’m trying to find a book I read in the late 80s. It was about a British family with several children. The book was told from the perspective of a younger brother. His older sister was named Helen and he didn’t get along with her at all. At one point in the book he leaves a towel balanced on the bathroom door as a “Helen-trap.” I remember thinking this book was hilarious but I don’t remember much more about it.
My book Stumper is a children’s book that I predict comes from the 90s (even 80s maybe). I had it read to me everyday when I was a kid (I’m 22 now).
I have no idea what it’s called, but the cover depicts night time (Navy blue) with a restaurant illustration! I remember the book being rather large and rectangle (long). To give you a visualization, it sort of resembles Van Gogh's “Cafe Terrace at Night” painting!
The book follows a brother and a sister who run amuck through the restaurant - they run through the chefs kitchen and hide under the tables. They also do a lot of magic tricks. I vividly remember a white rabbit in a hat and the extending handkerchiefs!
The girl has black hair in a short haircut, and I can’t remember what the brother looks like.
I suspect that it’s not a popular childrens book as I’ve looked at countless lists and it’s never been there!
If you can find this book, I will be beyond happy. I have literally been searching for it for YEARS!
This is a beautifully illustrated, middle-reader American (I think) fantasy book about a brother/sister or possibly male/female friends who somehow stumbled from their somewhat urban home/apartment building into a medieval setting when coming home from school one day in the woods near their home.
I was born in 1970 and was a very early and voracious reader, so this book cannot have been published much later than 1976; my guess (contextually) is that it’s most-likely a little earlier than that.
I am trying to find a kid’s book published in the mid 80s. The story is about a brother and sister that find a pocket watch and use it to time travel to the 1700s to find/rescue their father that is lost in time.
Sister and brother escape bad man. Read this scary chapter book about 1970 in middle school. About a sister and brother, home alone who have to cleverly escape a bad man who is downstairs. Sister cuts her hair to disguise. About their adventure.
