339O: Children’s Book of Short Stories Published in the 1960s or early 1970s

Hello. When I was around 5 or 6 years old (1972 to 1973) I loved a book of short stories. I think it contained around a dozen or so stories.

One of the stories was about a lost cat (or kitten). The cat is lonely, cold, and hungry. The cat wandered around and found a pond with a fish in it. The cat tries to grab the fish, but is pulled into the water. (I think there may have been a fishing pole, and the cat got tangled in it.) When the owner of the house heard the ruckus outside, he went out to retrieve the fish and cat. The cat then lives happily thereafter with the owner, and the owner cooks the fish for the cat.

Another story was about some people who went for a short boat ride on a lake in a rowboat. To make sure everyone person was accounted for, the organizer of the voyage had everyone wear a similar hat. Her plan was to count the number of hats before the journey, and then afterwards. If the number matched, then everyone was accounted for. I recall the voyage had some problems. I think the boat started to sink because someone forgot to install the drain plug. But it wasn’t dangerous because the lake was very shallow. At any rate, at the end of the voyage the organizer was worried & upset because the number of hats she counted afterwards was one less than the onset of the voyage. But someone pointed out that she forgot to count the hat on her head, and everyone laughed.

Thank you

339F: Baby Girl Cries Out For Her Big Old Cat

The book I am looking for is a children’s book that I had when I was about 5 or so and I am now 40.
The book is about an old big cat that would sit with its owners baby girl and push her in a swing daily and the baby loved it.  Then one day the baby girl’s mom sent the cat to go live somewhere else (I think that the cat went to a farm, it was not a huge part of the story at all, so I am saying a farm, it could have been somewhere else, the cat was definitely sent somewhere)  The baby would not stop crying for the old big cat.  Nothing calmed the little baby girl down.  So the mom got the cat back.  And the baby was happy again.
The front cover of the book is a cat pushing a baby in a swing.
It is a hard cover book.
I think the title may have been the cats name or the name the baby girl called the cat
I appreciate your help with this, I have been trying to remember the name of this book for a long time so figured I would try this way out.

338Z: Witches and a Magic Stone

A young girl spends the summer with her Aunt Margaret (sometimes called Meg). The young girl finds an unusual stone that unknowingly to her, belongs to a forgetful witch named Lanie, who needs the stone in order to be able to fly. The witches come back looking for the stone, but the young girl has hidden it. Most of the book is about their efforts to get the stone back. At the end of the story, the young girl discovers her Aunt is actually the queen of or head of those same witches and in fact, is herself a witch and she has a pet black cat as her familiar. This is a young adult chapter book with pictures that I read in the 70’s.

338Q: Following the Mysterious Red Thread

The book I want to find is a children’s book. I am guessing it was published between the 1980s and early 1990s. The plot of the story is that these two girls (likely sisters) that are princesses and they find this mysterious red thread in their kingdom or castle. They often repeat “What is it? What is it? What could it be?” as they follow this red thread. Eventually the story ends with them finding where this red thread originated from, it was a large cat playing with a giant roll of red yarn. All pictures are cartoon drawings. I think it was a small hardcover book bound by that gold or silver lining.

337L: Picture Book Featuring Pink Cat And Blue Dog

Back in 2001 (I am 23 now, I was about 4-5 years old at the time), I recall picking out this book from my old preschool “library” that I borrowed for a weekend that I can’t remember the title of. However, I remember the character designs spot-on and I remember some vague idea about the subject that the book covered.
I don’t know if it’s much to go off of, but what I do remember is that it was definitely a children’s picture book about rain (or weather in general as the topic, this memory is very fuzzy for me) and the two main characters in this book are an anthropomorphic light pink cat (female) with yellow, almond-shaped eyes that wore either a raincoat or a fishing vest with a wide-brimmed hat of some sort and an anthropomorphic baby blue dog (male) that may or may not have had a raincoat on as well. I also remember that he either had a droopy or gruff-looking face while the cat had a more cheerful disposition. The dog was much taller than the cat in height and I think they were both weather reporters? Or maybe the cat was a weather reporter? Again, I’m not entirely sure.
The book itself was hardcover and looked relatively old and worn out at the time (keeping in mind that again, this is around 2001). So I’m assuming its older than that. The cover had an illustration of the female cat character and the male dog character standing beside each other in their raincoats, under an umbrella, while rain fell from the sky. (Again not entirely sure if this is what it was, my memory is fuzzy.)
This is all the information I have to go off of. I don’t remember the title, the author or the illustrator. Just what I mentioned above.
I tried googling this book for years with no luck whatsoever, but the closest I came was running into the phrase “It’s raining cats and dogs” when browsing children’s books and thinking that the book I’m looking for was either called that, was a twist on this phrase or maybe the characters I talked about were based off that idiom since the plot/subject of that book was about either rain or weather.
I’ve been looking for this book for so long with no success and I’m honestly starting to think that it never even existed. Maybe it’s just a false memory or a fever dream or something? If someone here knows what I’m talking about and could point me in the right direction, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks.

336B: Lion Has Feathers

I’m looking for a children’s book from the 1960’s or possibly very early ’70s.  It is NOT “Lion” by William Pene Du Bois.  The story was a lion who wanted to look different, and there was one particular illustration where he had feathers all over. The illustrations had very limited colors. I think in the end the lion decided that feathers were not for him, and went back to his original fur.

Thanks for any assistance you can give!

335X: Lassie-Like Story, Dimly Recalled

It’s a book I read in the 1970s (but it may have been published much earlier).  The central character is a family’s pet–a cat I think, but I’m unsure.  Maybe a dog.  The family lives on a river, maybe the Mississippi.  (My family was living on the river at the time, and the story may have been presented as a “local” tale.)  By accident one day the pet floats away on a raft.  Far downstream it comes ashore.  The heart of the story is akin to Lassie-Come-Home:  the pet struggles to return to the family.  In the closing pages I believe it does return to the house–but the family is just leaving and somehow there is no reunion.  Possibly the pet is even in the yard as the family packs out, and it hears the son’s voice as he laments that the pet never got back.  I could be imagining that last bit, but I’m pretty sure there’s no reunion.  I recall weeping at the near-miss, but all the other details are fuzzy.

333B: Tiny Magic Cat

I am.looking for a book I read between 1975-1980. It was a middle school aged book.  The.main character was a 10 to 12 year old girl. I can’t remember how, but she finds a cat who turns super small – like tiny enough to sit behind her ear. He talks to her and helps her through the trials of her life.
That’s all I can remember.  Thanks so much!
