I am looking for a book that really meant a lot to my sister when she was a little girl (early 60s). She doesn’t remember the title but it is about a boy who is blinded by a firecracker and then gets a seeing eye dog. Does this ring any bells?

345H: The Perfect Shot (Solved!)
My grandson remembers a book he wants to read again. He’s 26 and thinks he was around ten when I read it to him. Setting is Africa in the bush and the whole “journey/goal” is leading toward this main character “hunting" down a tiger and getting the “perfect shot”. At the end the hunter turns out to be a photographer and what an ending that was - the tension in the library was so high when I read that story. So I’m glad my grandson remembers that book.
I was a librarian in a pre-school through 3rd grade school and I bought it for our library so that would be between 1995 and 2005 but that doesn’t mean it was a new book at that time. I often bought used books from some big online store in Portland as we were just learning how to “Google” items like that way back then 🙂
345G: “A place…” book for a Brit (Solved!)
345A: Geometric Mood Diary (Solved!)
344N: Undercover Magical Woman and Her Moody Cat (Series) (Solved!)
It's a series about a young woman who was born into a powerful magical prophecy & a secret society was to murder her at her birth, but she was taken & given to a rich man in a different magical ability/ house/ guild who raised her to believe that she was weak in magical power, so she became a stiletto-wearing, marriage minded socialite instead. She just graduated from the academy(?), & her dream job/ life ambition is to be the magical administration building's reception hall's decorator so she can meet & marry a powerful man with the right status from an appropriate guild/family. However, her secret boyfriend/ leader of the magical world/ head of the most powerful guild (whom she’s known & flirted with forever because of her high-status parents) gives the job to her bff (whom he's dating on the side & plans to marry because she's more magically suitable), & forces her to join a rough & dangerous monster/ bad guy/ naughty troll/ misbehaving goblin- hunting task force which is lead by the brother she didn't know her boyfriend had. So she does, in her stilettos, on her own terms, & with her funny & excessively pampered cat.
I think it's 3 books.
First one they end up undercover at a hotel, & the girl works with the big hunky brother guy (who is secretly not awesome, who likes to hook up with & wreck the women on his team, I think his last team hook up was another guy on the team’s fiancée & she died... and now that guy’s not on the team), a funny, charming guy who spends more time in the bathroom & on his hair than she does, who we find out in book 2 is pure awesome, & a huge & burly animal mage guy who soothes her moody cat. She & the brother work while while the 2 funny teammates chase pretty girls at the pool in their downtime.
I think she makes herself & the brother guy disappear at the pool at one point while they amp the volume on two bad guys’ conversation.
There may have been a potty-mouthed goblin issue in book 1 or maybe 3?
2nd book she & the awesome hair guy go undercover as a married couple to a haunted, murder Inn, where the cook/maid? Is a weather mage who kills off the guests & maybe the owner too.
I read these within the last 1-3 years, I believe. It’s all starting to blur together, & I can’t remember book 3 which is why it popped up in my literary Rolodex so I can now read it again! It was hysterical & I loved it & cant remember everything anymore!!! Huzzah for the rereads! But I can’t remember the title or cover either so I can’t find it.
344G: Backstabbing (Literally?) Females At Dream Beach House (Solved!)
344D: Time Traveling Children Kidnap Girl Leaving London On Train (Solved!)
Hi! I hope you can help me because this is driving me batty LOL. I believe it was a book or series of children’s books. There was some sort of isolated world outside time, but it was starting to show cracks and it was feared their world was ending. Two children believed a girl on a train being sent away from London during the war was responsible, so they traveled in time and kidnapped her . Ultimately, they were convinced she was innocent. Then, they had to hide her as a visiting cousin; there was a lot of advanced technology, like a money chip and a pen that had special abilities when she went to school with them. The place traded with other time eras; there was a river around it that played into the plot. Ultimately, I believe an uncle and his daughter were the bad guys. There was a battle; the children were locked up in some sort of phasing clock tower. There was a powerful, godlike couple who ultimately woke up/remembered their real selves and put everything to rights. I believe the girl’s family was saved and allowed to come live with her there. That’s all I can remember. Thanks very much!
343Y: Nonfiction book about two women who exchange lives and husbands (Solved!)
The author was Miriam/Mimi Keiffer/Kieffer/Kiefer?, probably published in the early 80s, paperback. Mimi and another woman traded lives and husbands for a short time; it didn’t turn out well. Miriam or Mimi worked in administration at a university in New York.
343T: Summer Time Twins (Solved!)
The book I am looking for is a young adult book. I read it when I was a pre-teen in the early 90’s. It had twins, a boy and a girl, and the girl was named Willa. The boy may have been named August. They were also pre-teens. Their mother may have had a baby—a boy?? I remember trees, summer time and perhaps a tree swing or hammock. Maybe lemonade?
343Q: Boy Collects Golden Dragon Scales to Make A Dragon (Solved!)
Here are the details of a book my dad read around 1960 (possibly as late as 1963, but unlikely).
Plot elements: A boy (named maybe Ling or Lo, or a hyphenated name with one of those syllables) goes on a long quest collecting golden dragon scales that in the end fit together like a puzzle and make a dragon.
Genre: kids chapter book
Publish date: likely late 40’s early 50’s (my dad’s best guess—it was a library book)
Physical description of book: blue cloth hardcover
Illustrations: he remembers an illustrative motif of cranes, like on chapter headings maybe
Some books he claims it is NOT that I’ve found:
- Loot of the Flying Dragon (by Kenneth Payson Kempton)
- The Pink Porcelain Pipe (by Pauline Scott)
- The Overcoming of the Dragon (by LC Sturgis)
- The Last Dragon (by Dan Totheroh)
Many thanks for whatever you can do! I’ll at least know I tried my best after gnawing this bone for decades.
