I am searching for a book for my Uncle Frank who was born in 1929. It may be called the Witch of Windy Hill and it may be a collection of stories. In one story, there were these lines “Mrs. Mite and Mrs. Midge…underneath the wishing bridge…how I wonder when and whether she will lose her bonnet feather what a broom twood make” and there was mention of Colonel Sand, I think.
Autobiography, read sometime between ’88-’92. As young children the author and her sister were placed in an orphanage by their mother. She describes her experience having TB. She did not realize until years later that it was an orphanage, I think she thought it was boarding school.
Hi, I had this book probably in the late 90’s. It was a paperback book of fairy tales, but not traditional ones, “different” ones, and I’m pretty sure it was an anthology. I’ve thought of quite a few of the stories and plots but can’t remember the name of the book or editor. Anyways, The borders of the cover were red and there was some kind of blue and green forest type scene on the front I think? The colors looked like a drawing, not a real photo or anything. One of the stories is about a prince crossing an ocean and his boat begins to sink. A mermaid kisses him all over his face and he can breath underwater. He goes to live with her for a while but also wants to go back and tell his parents he’s ok, he does, meets a girl on land and marries her, and when he crosses the ocean again the sea princess drowns him I think. Another one is about a girl getting ready to be married and she meets some kind of half man half stag in a forest and he puts a braid of his hair around her finger. When she goes back home and goes to get married, the ring won’t go on her finger and the stag man shows up to take her back to the forest. The third story I remember is just about a girl with blue hair (maybe a mermaid?) who’s missing and her brothers are coming to a town one by one to search for her. They all end up getting indentured to different people and she shows up in town (or something) riding a tiger. And last, a princess stitches her dog into a tapestry she’s creating and stitches herself in too. Wanted to escape the castle or marriage or something. I found a similar answered question about a story like my very last one, but I know this one was in a book with lots of other stories, not by itself.
I’m looking for a children s book where a group of children (I believe all siblings) go into town and pick up ingredients to make a loaf of bread except they don’t measure and when they bake the bread in the oven it over flows the oven, and eventually over takes the house coming out of the windows. I believe they end up cutting of pieces and either giving it or selling it to their neighbors in the small town, or village.
I don’t think it’s the Fairy Tale Book. About 9 -12 in tall – thick with beautifully coloured illustrations. Briar Rose, Rapunzel + many more. Maybe also rhymes & riddles. I really want to buy a copy but can’t find one.
Read in late 70’s, may have been dated at the time. Cover was blue & grey or white. Girl sent on holiday & adjusting to a new life in a relatives home (w/ cousins?). I’m looking for a kids book from my childhood. The protagonist is a little girl, possibly named Elizabeth, who has a new baby in her family and is having trouble adjusting. Elizabeth wears black and white striped tights with Mary-Jane shoes. Can you help?
This book is probably Christian fiction/romance. My mom read this circa 2009, but that’s not necessarily the date of publication. The book is the last in a series of 3 or 4 books, and the main character of this volume, Mercy, plays only a minor role in the first two books. It takes place in the late 1800s, she thinks. This is how my mother summarized the plot:
Mercy is the lone daughter in a family of about 6 brothers and her father, who make her do all the housework and they are ungrateful. (Her mother is deceased.) The men get their meals cooked, their clothes washed, their house cleaned by their sister and NEVER give a thought to the miserable life she leads. She never complains because she figures it’s her lot in life.
Then one day she discovers a new neighbor down the road, a man with a little boy. She worms her way into the house, starts making meals, playing with the little kid, etc., even though the guy shows no interest. The best part is the end, where the guy finds out where she lives, and he goes over to talk to her. He finds her outside in the freezing cold, hanging wash, while the dad and brothers are all relaxing inside the warm house. He goes in, tells the men what he thinks of them for
sitting around while she’s out working in the cold, and he goes outside and takes her home with him, right then.

I’m searching for a children’s book about a mother cat giving birth to kittens. The title was Sunshine’s Kittens or Sunshine has Kittens. Definitely the name Sunshine. It was around in the early 70s – not sure of the publication date.
My grandparents had a children’s book about a kitten that was always on the wrong side of the door – the title may have been something like that. It was a small book, maybe 4″ x 6″ inches, with a light blue cover and an oval in the center with a picture of a little girl and/or the kitten on a front step. I think the kitten was black and white. It would have been in the early ’70s that they had it, but I have no idea how old it was. I don’t remember it looking too old at that time.
