This book was probably published in the 70’s. Story of teens in a mental (?) hospital working with a new (?) young doctor trying to connect with them. One character is named Bonnie and she is mute or doesn’t interact with people but likes when the doctor (?) sings “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean” so he starts to change the words and sings things like, “My Bonnie Lies Over the Pizza”, etc. Character called Zero was, I think, male, and I think, dies at the end. It was a small paperback size book with a hardcover that I read in the 80’s from my public library. I believe the cover was white.

356W: 1960/70 children’s book with four dolls on cover
When I was in grade school late 60’s or early 70’s, I used to adore this pink book. It was hard cover and had 4 girl names on it and a drawn picture of dolls. Not illustrated, just a sketch. It had 4 names of the dolls and I think one was like Rosemary. The title only had those 4 names as much as I can recall. Don’t remember the story even. I just remember the hard cover was a bright pink with the 4 names of the dolls.
356S: Unicorn in Tapestry Comes to Life
I’m looking to find a book from my childhood, and have now been through hundreds of internet pages. Hoping you might have a lead! All I remember really is:
- illustrated color paperback picture book, probably c. Late ‘60s- late ‘90s
- story about a group of siblings moving into or visiting a castle? Maybe just an old house with a tower
- a unicorn from a tapestry comes to life, and he is white with a beard. The children bring him down out of the tapestry.
Things I’m not sure of but seem familiar:
-something about a yellow bedroom
- maybe an illustration with one of the children looking behind the tapestry
Thank you! The Magic Tree house has a story with some similar elements, but that’s not quite it.
356Q: The House Made of Plants Blends Inside with Outside
Looking for picture book about a house that was made of plants. The outside world merges surrealy with the inside room (resembles art of Jacek Yerka but it's not him). Book was mostly visual and the color of the art was very green. The story takes place at night. There is an old man with white hair in the house. Likely an older book from the 60s or 70s, or at least has the 60s/70s hippie/spiritual vibe. If you find this with just this info you are unto a god, thank you.
356P: Trying to find a novel set in England during World War II (Solved!)
356I: Seeking the name of a YA book from the 80s
*It was about a girl, age 9ish-12ish, who was an only child.
*Her mom gets pregnant, which I don’t think the kid was thrilled about, but mom has a stillbirth or miscarriage.
*There’s a scene where mom comes home from the hospital after losing the baby and the girl is cuddling with her and there’s a rather detailed description of what the mom’s tummy feels like now that there’s no longer a baby in it.
*There’s also a scene where the girl’s aunt is babysitting her, I think while mom is in the hospital, and the aunt takes the girl to a bar for dinner where the aunt’s boyfriend’s band plays. The girl orders spaghetti and a chocolate shake. I remember this because it blew my mind at the time and sounded like the best dinner ever.
*I THINK there may have been another book to the story, wherein the mom winds up having another healthy baby.
*It was written in the 70s or 80s.
*I read it sometime in the late 80s.
*It was similar in style to a Beverly Cleary or Judy Blume, but I DON’T think it was written by either of them or by any of the other really well known children’s authors of that time.
*I am NOT thinking of the Anastasia Krupnik series.
That’s it. Any ideas? There’s no particular reason for me trying to remember, except that it pops into my head every once in a while and drives me bananas.
356G: People With Special Powers Live On Narrow Inhabitable Strip Of Planet
This is about a two-book series that was likely written between 1975 and 1999. The survivors of a planet lived on a narrow inhabitable strip of the planet. On both sides there were less habitable areas. On one side lived mutants who were like vampires and werewolves. In the strip lived the main characters in a town, one a strongman, one a mind reader whose wife was a healer and operated a clinic, one a blind woman who could see the future. There were several towns. The mind reader has a female child whose skin changed colors and also had a son. The leader of the werewolves had a son who killed those living in the town where the main characters lived. When the blind woman got her sight back temporarily, she lost the ability to see the future. The healer’s wife died near the end of the book and the mind reader decided to move to another town where his children had previously moved.
355V: 1970s Judy Blumesque YA Novel
I’m sure I got this book from Weekly Reader in the early 80s but was probably published in the 70s. Opens with protagonist making a homemade costume for school with spray painted gold boots and a sword. I think I remember parents getting a divorce. I remember main character going into his parents’ bedroom looking for help with costume and mom getting dressed and getting a run in her pantyhose and saying, “Damn!” which I perceived as scandalous as may mother would never use such language - ha! Protagonist has an older high school age brother who is enamored with girlfriend and their song is “Stairway to Heaven”.
355U: Metiek Survives Holocaust (Solved!)
I don’t even remember how old I was when I read it. I’m thinking in the late 60’s or early 70’s. It was a paperback. A young boy nicknamed Metiek (I think) gets separated from his family during the Holocaust. I think, not completely sure, it was Warsaw Poland. He gets captured and thrown on a train to one of the concentration camps. He escapes the train and ends up back in Warsaw (?) on the streets and becomes very street wise. Later he is able to make it to New York City where some relatives are located, and ends up working in the garment district. He becomes successful, marries, she is an actress. They build a nice home, she goes on a vegetarian diet in order to get pregnant, is successful and they have several kids. They (wife and kids) die in a house fire. Metiek (don’t remember his real name) is alone. True Story, his biography. It had pictures in it.
