My younger brother and I used to regularly borrow this spooky picture book in early-mid 90s (could also be from the 80s). I remember rich illustrations and a main character with an Ichabod Crane nervousness about him. Can’t remember any of the plot except that at the climax of the book he is in a dark church and he believes there are ghosts all around. My brother’s memory is that the main character was an organist/pianist and that another character dresses up as a ghost and chases him off. I don’t *think* this is a version of Sleepy Hollow. But given how vague my memory is, anything is possible. Even if it is, I would love to figure out which version it is specifically. My brother and I have been trying to figure this out for years.

371V: Dark illustrated ghost book
I remember this illustrated book from when I was a kid. It had dark drawings somewhat similar to Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark but not quite. Some of the elements I remember are that there’s a ship or boat?
There’s at least two men. One man is possibly stabbed. I remember a ghost maybe. Blood as well. The men’s bodies are shown from various strange perspectives to look stretched out and ghostly or long.
Fiction.
Plot: Not sure.
I read this between 1997-2005 roughly.
Book’s intended audience: Seems too scary to be a kids book but there wasn’t much text. It was definitely heavily based in illustration.
I read it in Ohio, USA.
That’s about it !
I know it exists.
Thanks for your time.
367L: Late ‘80s Teen Romance – Ghost (Solved!)
Teen romance set in an old mill converted into offices. Girl has after-school job as evening receptionist/secretary. Meets boy she thinks works there but turns out he is a ghost. Set in Autumn/Winter in eastern US (PA? New England?) small town.
365O: London Ghost was Killed by Bomb
Looking for a book of short middle grade ghost stories read in 80s (so possibly 70s/80s book). Boy attends school in London and meets a girl who is revealed to be a ghost and had been killed by a bomb. Possibly a timeslip situation where he tries to save her or maybe she saves kids at the school from a fire? Not Kept In Timperley I think it is mentioned she was killed by a doodlebug, but not sure on that. Thanks!
360Y: “Lead us to you Sarah!” or “Keep knocking Sarah!”
I read the book in the late ’90s? I had to have been in the 5th grade. I read a lot of paranormal books around that time! The book itself might have been a collection of ghost stories. I don’t think it was “Stories to Tell in the Dark,” but I could be wrong. All I know is that this particular story stuck with me for over twenty-five years.
A family moves into a house with their daughter. Could be just a single mom. The house was purchased after the woman who lived in it before passed. Soon after they move in the daughter starts having nightmares or is getting sick. She starts to talk about the ghost of a girl.
A medium is eventually called in and he holds a seance. The ghost’s name is Sarah (or Sara) and he asks that she knock to answer questions. Eventually, it is discovered that she is in on the property. With the knocks, she leads them to her resting place. “Keep Knocking Sarah!” or “Lead us to you Sarah!” is shouted by the medium. Her coffin is found behind the wall of the closet or the wall of the girl’s bedroom. Sarah is moved and buried next to her mother.
359R: Evil Ghost Tries to Bring Orphan Girl into her World (Solved!)
Looking for a book where an orphaned young girl goes to live with her cousins – I think there were four cousins – two boys and two girls. I think the story was set in England because I remember a scene where the group goes out for fish and chips. The orphan is having a hard time adjusting and becomes friendly with a ghost who is haunting the house. The ghost – also a young girl – is trying to get the orphan to come into her world by dying. The orphan is eventually rescued from the evil ghost by her cousins
358W: Letter Seems to Lead to Boyfriend Stealer’s Death (But Doesn’t)
I don't recall the tile or author. I purchased the book via Scholastic books around 1985 in Toronto, Canada (from school).
Cover: A blond girl (I don't remember what she was wearing)
Synopsis: One summer, the blond girl visits her cousin who lives in another city (their mothers are sisters). The Christmas before, the blond girl visited her cousin. Her cousin had a boyfriend but she was sure another girl was trying to steal him away. So the blond girl and cousin want to get back at her. They write her secret admirer love letters asking her to meet somewhere. The "boyfriend stealer" drives out that night but dies in a car crash. The blond girl and cousin are distraught with guilt. That summer, the cousin tells the blond girl that she thinks the boyfriend stealer is haunting her. Strange things have been happening lately. Anyway, we find out that the strange events were due to the new gardener who loved the boyfriend stealer. He knew about the letter and blamed them for her death. But the boyfriend stealer thought the secret admirer letters were coming from the gardener, who would stalk her, so she ignored them. The night of the crash she was actually on her way to visit her own boyfriend. She never intended to steal the blond girl's cousin's boyfriend. They were only friends. Phewph! Very long, I'm sorry, but I'm hoping you could help me find this book.
356N: A children’s book about a kid bully who becomes a ghost
This is an illustrated children’s book that I read in the 90’s. It roughly involved a kid bully who somehow dies and POSSIBLY turns into a ghost who is then placed into a message in a bottle somehow. This is all that I remember.
340X: Man Befriends Ghost At Haunted House
I am looking for a picture book that I enjoyed when I was a child in the late 70s. It was hardbound and told the story of a man who had a long-nosed coupe and inherits/comes into a mansion and after a foggy drive there and inhabiting it discovers it is haunted. He discovers a secret tunnel underground (under a lake?) and ultimately makes friends with the ghost and I believe is led to a stash of treasure. I loved this story as I scared easily but was fascinated with ghosts, and in recollecting it reminded me slightly of Edward Gorey’s work. I think he might have been a bit Sherlockesque with a coat, hat and pipe. Had a very 60s/70s style and sensibility in the illustration. Would love to have a copy. Thank you for your sleuthing!
335L: Hat maker purchases a haunted painting of (I believe) a ship captain
Several years ago I read a book about a woman who was opening a hat shop in an old house. She was shopping for decorations and was drawn to a painting of a captain. She bought it, and it turned out to be possessed by the captain, who became an annoyance, moving stuff and throwing her hats in the floor. She couldn’t see him unless she was asleep, and he would visit her in her dreams. She finally banished him from her dreams and he began visiting her roommate, who befriended/fell in love with him and found out he’d previously lived in the house. Any idea what the title or author of this book would be? It’s not The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.
